Billboard: Ghost Hounds New Album, ‘Roses Are Black’

In a recent article from Billboard, writer Gary Graff describes the return of Ghost Hounds, leading up to the release of their new album, Roses Are Black.

“Ghost Hounds could not have asked for a more auspicious return to active duty this year.

The Pittsburgh-based rock quintet has been busy, and visible, leading up to the Nov. 5 release of Roses Are Black…. which ends a 10-year gap between albums. Ghost Hounds opened for the Rolling Stones during July in Washington, D.C. and recently played several dates supporting ZZ Top and Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band. “When you get a chance to play not only with icons but whose songs you grew up with and were inspired by, it truly is a privilege,” Ghost Hounds guitarist and founder Thomas Tull tells Billboard. “It really is a blast.”

Tull wrote and produced Roses Are Black with singer-songwriter David Grissom (John Mellencamp, Dixie Chicks, Joe Ely) and Kevin Rowe (Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd), with legendary engineer Eddie Kramer (Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix) also on board. The set runs the gamut, from Stones-style rockers to country-flavored ballads, along with a cover of Cliff Richard’s “Devil Woman.””

Ghost Hounds Open for Bob Seger in Pittsburgh

In his recent coverage of Bob Seger’s farewell tour, Scott Tady, writer for The Times, applauds Ghost Hounds for their tight sound and rock n’ roll meets blues boogie as they opened for Seger on October 17, 2019 at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, PA.

“And like “Rock and Roll Never Forgets” reminds us, there’s always new bands out there playing it loud and lean, just like Thursday’s opening act, Ghost Hounds.

The Pittsburgh-based band earned hearty applause for its tight sound. Delivering rock ‘n’ roll with a blues boogie, Ghost Hounds ripped through songs from a debut album arriving in November, plus a wicked-cool cover of ’70s song “Devil Woman,” which has become a setlist staple. Staying on the road with Seger as he plays his final week of shows, after earlier this autumn supporting ZZ Top on the road, Ghost Hounds are led by the soulful singing of Tre Nation, who’s often smiling or twirling his microphone, and the rugged yet smooth tandem guitar of Johnny Baab and Thomas Tull, part-owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers. No wonder Franco Harris introduced them on stage.

Though a big part of the Ghost Hounds’ fun Thursday was watching keyboardist Joe Munroe, of Center Township, whose fleet finger work grabbed the attention during the band’s final song, “Bad News.” Munroe also chipped in with vocal harmonies on several songs. With his head tilted back and a look of delight on his face, you had to wonder if, at some point, he was thinking about the times he had sat in the audience at that same arena, or at the ol’ Civic Arena across the street.

Indeed, rock and roll never forgets.”

– Scott Tady, The Times

On the heels of an opening performance with the Rolling Stones this summer, and the announcement of upcoming performances with ZZ Top and Bob Seger, Ghost Hounds have announced the details of ‘Roses Are Black,’ their new album coming out November 5, 2019.  The album features guest appearances by Slash, Kenny Aronoff, Reese Wynans, and Michael Rhodes, alongside producing and songwriting partners David Grissom and Kevin Bowe. The album was mixed by six-time Grammy Award-winning producer Vance Powell (Chris Stapleton, The White Stripes, Danger Mouse, Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon) and engineered by Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin).

Ghost Hounds is a rock ‘n’ roll band at a time when the world needs more of them. The band’s new album recalls the universal appeal of rock’s ‘70s heyday, but with a fresh, crackling energy crafted by founder and guitarist Thomas Tull, and voiced with fluid power by vocalist Tre’ Nation. The band’s gritty sound reflects the blue-collar heritage of its hometown of Pittsburgh; a versatile outfit whose music fits in an Iron City barroom or a stadium — such as the one in Maryland where Ghost Hounds opened for the Rolling Stones in July. There’s plenty of energy and rock ‘n’ roll abandon, along with tight playing and intricate songcraft.

“I think it’s a direct reflection of my own eclectic music tastes,” Tull says. “The Rolling Stones are my favorite band of all time, so a lot of this is inspired by the Stones. They fell in love with American blues. They have great country songs. Those things all appealed to me. Having all those different voices is important, and that’s what I want our band to have too.”

‘Roses Are Black’ certainly celebrates that diversity across its 12 tracks “Bad News” spreads the good word of Ghost Hounds’ return by throttling up into some 12-bar fury, echoed later on in “Push That Rock Up the Hill” and “We Roll Hard.” “Skin in the Game” reflects that Stones love Tull speaks of, while “Black Rose” and “Fire Under Water” are classic rock tunes and “Almost Loved You” would sound at home in Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe. The group’s softer and soulful side is just as potent on tracks such as “When Your Shadow Touches Mine,” “Til It’s Gone” and “Second Time Around,” and Ghost Hounds’ treatment of “Devil Woman” shoots the Cliff Richards’ original through with high-test adrenaline, including biting guitar solos.

“I missed music,” Tull explains. “I missed writing. I missed performing. I missed the camaraderie of a band. I decided this was something I really wanted to do.”

As the release of ‘Roses Are Black’ approaches, Ghost Hounds’ lineup – Tull, guitarist Johnny Baab, bassist Bennett Miller, drummer Blaise Lanzetta and powerhouse vocalist Tre Nation – are looking forward to making their case back on the road. “All of these songs to me just come alive in the band’s performance,” Tull says. “We tracked every song live, and we wanted this to be, in some ways, an old-fashioned record, where you can listen to the record and then go hear the band and say, ‘Yeah, that’s the song I heard.’ There’s nothing we can’t pull off live.”

Rockers of Ghost Hounds To Open For ZZ Top This Fall

Ghost Hounds Band BW

Ghost Hounds, the rock group who garnered attention while opening for The Rolling Stones earlier this year, have been announced as the opening act for ZZ Top’s 50th Anniversary Tour this fall.

The Pittsburgh-based band will provide support on dates kicking-off on October 22 in Melbourne, Florida, followed by gigs in cities like Bethlehem, Erie, and Tallahassee. They’ll appear at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland, as well as Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut and Wings Event Center in Missouri. The group, founded by guitarist Thomas Tull, will be touring in support of their forthcoming record, Roses Are Black. Tull will be take the stage with a new lineup including guitarist Johnny Baab, bassist Bennett Miller, drummer Blaise Lanzetta, and vocalist Tre Nation.

While Ghost Hounds broke up years ago for Tull to focus on Legendary Entertainment’s round of hit films like “Jurassic World,” “Straight Outta Compton,” and “The Hangover,” as well as other ventures, he decided that after seling Legendary in 2016, he was ready to “push that old rock (and roll) back up the hill.”

“I missed music,” Tull said in a press release. “I missed writing. I missed performing. I missed the camaraderie of a band. I decided this was something I really wanted to do.”

He described these new songs as a part of an “old-fashioned record, where you can listen to the record and then go hear the band and say, ‘Yeah, that’s the song I heard,’” noting that “there’s nothing we can’t pull off live.”

ZZ Top were slated to kick-off their tour later this month, but the band’s drummer, Frank Beard, was diagnosed with pneumonia and was told to rest by doctors. The first four dates of their tour have been called-off; shows will pick-up on August 21 in Woodinville, Washington. Check out the group’s full round of tour dates below, and those with Ghost Hounds.

Rock, Reggae & Relief Recap

We had a great time rocking out in the city we call home for the two-day Rock, Reggae, & Relief Festival on August 24th in downtown Pittsburgh, PA. We performed the first day of the festival alongside other acts like Gavin DeGraw, The Expendables, and Roots of Creation. All proceeds from the event were donated to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance to help support finding a cure for ovarian cancer, advocating for patients, and providing support for survivors. Thank you to those who came out to this charity event and helped support a great cause. Here are some highlights from the show.
